What is Optifine?

A Minecraft optimization mod, OptiFine enhances the performance and looks of Minecraft by supporting HD textures and giving users many options for customizing. The official OptiFine description can be found on the Minecraft Forums.

So basically, it is a mod that’ll smoothen out your gameplay, increase your FPS, and make sure that there are no lag spikes when you’re playing; it will also implement other techniques that enable a better gameplay experience for the player. Apart from being an optimizing mod, the mod also comes with many great features that have nothing to do with optimizing the game, like the zoom feature. This feature has been around for years, and many people think it is a part of the vanilla game; that shows you how popular the Optifine mod is. The Optifine mod also has a separate option for introducing shaders into the game. It basically turns your Minecraft into a more realistic version of the game for those who don't know what shaders are. It doesn't mess with the texture pack or look of the game, all the default textures remain the same, and the shaders only add a natural sun to the game. So there are shadows from trees, you and your builds as well. The best part about the shaders is that they make the sunsets and sunrises look gorgeous, especially with the new mountains added in a recent update. Optifine also gives the player many different options that they can tinker with to increase the game's performance even more. For example, there is this one setting which, if turned on, improves performance by turning off ceratin animations at certain times. So basically, if you're looking at a campfire, it’ll act naturally and emit particles. Still, as soon as you turn around, the animation stops. This is a pretty handy feature to have. The mod was first released during the 1.4 betas. It was made specifically to push back the fog during the early days of Minecraft. Eventually, the mod got famous, and many players started using it. Hence, the developers kept adding new features, and one of the most famous ones was increasing the game's performance. The difference between when you’re playing with Optifine and when you’re not playing with it is mind-blowing; it makes you wonder why don’t the folks at Mojang don't just buy out the mod and add it to the vanilla game. Almost every youtuber I watch has this mod installed; it’s just that good.
